Huntsville Genealogical Computing Society

Part of the monthly HGCS meeting are special programs on a wide range of genealogy related areas emphasizing computer technology and software.  These programs are designed to enhance overall genealogy knowledge using computer technology.  The programs are presented by either an invited guest or an HGCS member.  Each program is approximately 1-hour to 1 1/2 hours in length.  This years scheduled programs are listed below:

HGCS welcomes Frances Robb as the guest speaker for the evening.  Members, if you have questions about any old photographs you might have please bring them to the meeting.  
If you know of someone that is not a member but would be interested in the program on "Family Photos" please invite them.
Mrs. Robb's book on the history of Alabama photography from 1839-1941 in still in the works and will be available at a later date.

Feb 21 Tuesday The HGCS will have Archivist, Anne Coleman as the guest speaker and her presentation will be "Chasing Local Secrets Hidden at UAH". 
Anne is trained as a reference librarian and received her Master's of Library Studies from the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) in 1998.  She started working for the UAH Library in 1999 and was assigned to the Archives Department in 2000.  The Archives Department does not go out and purchase collections, but many collections are donated to the Archives.  It is Anne's job to organize, preserve, and protect these collections.  It is also important to be able to share the information found in these collections.
Archives is home to some fascinating collections and Anne will be talking to the HGCS members and their guest.  The public is invited to attend this meeting.

Apr 16 Monday The Huntsville History Collection:  A Portal to Huntsville’s Past.  Describe and demonstrate the Huntsville History Collection, a website which explores the history and architecture of Huntsville and Madison County.  There are over 8,000 pictures, drawings, stories and links of interest to local residents.  Deane Dayton. The collection was developed by Deane and his wife Carol, and launched in cooperation with the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library.
