Huntsville Genealogical
Computing Society
Our ten regular monthly
meetings are held on the
3rd Monday of each month at the Huntsville Main Public Library
Auditorium located at 915 Monroe Street, Huntsville, Alabama. (map).
Our ten regular meetings are from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
The remaining two meeting are social events including a picnic in July and
Christmas party in December. The social events are held at various
locations.
The
ten regular meetings begin at
7:00pm with a general membership business meeting followed by a guest speaker on
a topic relating to the field of technology in genealogy (2012
meetings and programs).
Past guest speakers topics included:
 | Individuals noted for
their genealogy accomplishments and achievements; |
 | Computer hardware and software
updates by local computer retail stores; |
 | Demonstrations of unique
computer software programs that can enhance family history research and
documentation; |
 | Methodology and techniques
used by individuals who have successfully written and published their family
history; |
 | Demonstrations on how to use
commercial genealogy programs; |
 | How to perform family history
research on the Internet; |
 | Helpful Internet links for
family history research; |
 | Huntsville Public Library
genealogy resources; |
 | How to get the use the LDS
genealogy database; |
 | Photo repair and enhancement
techniques; |
Occasionally in place of the
guest speaker we have a special "workshop" or a "show and
tell" program. Workshops include hands on use of computer hardware,
general use of computers and special genealogy software programs.
The society has both
"Windows" and "Macintosh" users, so the computer related
programs generally try to accommodate what's available in both type systems.
Two annual social events are held
each year: the July meeting is our annual Picnic and the December meeting is
our annual Christmas Party.
At the November meeting
nominations for the following year Officers is conducted. Election of the new officers
is held the following month at the December Christmas party.
The
ten regular meetings are open to the general
public and
you are welcome to come and be our guest with no obligation to join.

HGCS
welcomes Frances Robb as
the guest speaker for the evening. Members, if you have questions
about any old photographs you might have please bring them to the meeting.
If you know of someone that is not a member but would be interested
in the program on "Family Photos" please invite them.
Mrs. Robb's book on the history of Alabama photography from 1839-1941 in
still in the works and will be available at a later date. |

The HGCS will have
Archivist, Anne Coleman as the guest speaker and her presentation will be
"Chasing Local Secrets Hidden at UAH".
Anne is trained as a reference librarian and received her Master's of
Library Studies from the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) in 1998.
She started working for the UAH Library in 1999 and was assigned to
the Archives Department in 2000. The Archives Department does not go
out and purchase collections, but many collections are donated to the
Archives. It is Anne's job to organize, preserve, and protect these
collections. It is also important to be able to share the
information found in these collections. Archives is home to some
fascinating collections and Anne will be talking to the HGCS members and
their guest. The public is invited to attend this meeting. |
